Artisans in the small town of El Puente del Arzobispo hand-paint every animal and line on these elegant ceramic plates. This design originated in the 16th century and features a wild boar. The blue brushwork is painted on a warm, ivory white background. These plates will bring a classic beauty to any table, whether used for tapas or individual salads.

Our friend Belén invited us to her small ceramics studio to take a look at her new patterns, and we discovered something classic instead! Under the piles of boldly colored ceramics we found a plate with an elegant blue design that captured our attention.

Belén told us that the design originated over 400 years ago, and gained fame throughout the region. Although colorful modern designs are more common now, she continues painting the traditional pattern to this day.

El Puente del Arzobispo is a beautiful small village in the countryside not far from Toledo. It is famous for its abundant wildlife, which is reflected in the designs. The 16th century artisans could not afford multi-colored glazes, so the subtle blue was the most common color in their ceramics. We visited the local ceramics museum and found plates from 400 years ago with designs almost identical to what they are producing today.

El Puente del Arzobispo is named after a bridge built in the Middle Ages. To serve the bridge builders and their crews, artisans arrived to make bowls and other pottery. Over time the community became famous for the beautiful designs they created. To this day, the town is filled with ceramics studios producing classic and modern plates, bowls and decorations that are sold throughout Spain.

This plate is lead free and food safe. While these plates are dishwasher safe, you may want to hand wash them to prevent the glaze from fading over time.
