Pan de Cristal is an amazingly light, airy bread with a honeycombed interior. Each package holds five sliced pieces of bread, ready for the toaster. The crust is very thin and shatteringly crisp.
Bakers in Barcelona had a mission to create a crisp, airy bread with an otherworldly lightness. After years of experimentation, they introduced Pan de Cristal, or “glass bread.”
Cristal bread is all natural, made from a mild sourdough starter. It has a delicate flavor and incredible crunch. After toasting, it is ideal for ‘pan con tomate’ (‘pa amb tomaquet’ in Catalan), the famed Catalan tomato toast. It is also great for sandwiches or as a crisp bread served with your favorite soup or salad.
Pan con tomate is a simple tomato dish often served for breakfast. Simply toast the bread, then rub with a sliced garlic clove. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, rub with half of a ripe tomato, sprinkle with salt and you are ready to serve. You can add sliced Ibérico ham or anchovies if you’d like. So simple and amazingly delicious!
